Yet despite this victory, Mr Zuma is by no means assured of the national presidency in 2009. For a start, his past could return to haunt him. He was acquitted of rape last year, but the National Prosecuting Authority, after yeaJuicy Couture Outlet rs of investigation, could well charge him for corruption again. His supporters dismiss his legal problems as a political conspiracy, but Mr Zuma would have to resign if convicted. In that case, Kgalema Motlanthe, the party's secretary-general, who has been elected as the party's number two, would take over.

Iran and the Arabs

RELATIONS between Iran's Shia revolutionaries and the rich, Sunni-dominated, American-protected Arabian monarchies of the Persian Gulf have never been easy. After America's invasion of Iraq in 2003, and Iran's electi Ralph Lauren Shoes n of the fire-breathing Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as president in 2005, they grew

markedly worse. Arab fears of Iran's regional ambitions, its influence over Shia minorities and its nuclear programme have lately been matched by Iranian worries about the loyalty of its own Arabs and the possibility of an attack launched from the American bases that speck Ralph Lauren Rugbys  the opposite shore.

But recent events signal a possible change. On the same day on which a new American National Intelligence Estimate overturned previous assertions that Iran is actively pursuing nuclear weapons, President Ahmadinejad made a first-ever appearance as a guest at the annual summit of the Gulf Co- operation Council (GCC), a body created in 1981 largely with the goal of containing revolutionary Iran. S Ralph Lauren Outletoon after the summit meeting, Saudi Arabia, the biggest by far of the GCC's six member states and long the most hostile to Iran, invited Mr Ahmadinejad to take part in the ann Kobe Vi l haj pilgrimage to Mecca. Another Arab heavyweight, Egypt, has also joined the charm offensive, sending its first high-level delegation to Iran in several years.

AFTER months of acrimony, the African National Congress (ANC) has elected Jacob Zuma to be its new leader. In a ballot of almost 4,000 delegates at the national conference of South Africa's ruling party in the small town of PoloJuicy Couture Handbags kwane, Mr Zuma defeated the incumbent, Thabo Mbeki, by a wider margin than some had predicted; 2,329 votes to 1,505. Mr Zuma, formerly the party's deputy leader, is now in prime position

The ruling is important because it may increase the pressure on companies to treat "free overtime" (work that an employee is obliged to perform but not paid for) as paid work. That would send shockwaves through corporate Japan,Juicy Couture Outlet  where long, long hours are the norm.

HARA-KIRI is a uniquely Japanese form of suicide. Its corporate equivalent is karoshi, "death by overwork". Since this was legally recognised as a cause of death in the 1980s, the number of cases submitted to the government forJuicy Couture Handbags  the designation has soared; so has the number of court cases that result when the government refuses an application. In 1988 only about 4% of applications were successful. By

2005 that share had risen to 40%. If a death is judged karoshi, surviving family members may receive

Now a recent court ruling has put companies under pressure to change their ways. On November 30th the Nagoya District Court accepted Hiroko Uchino's claim that her husband, Kenichi, a third-generation Toyota employee, was a victim of karoshi when he died in 2002 at the Nike Air Max  age of 30. He collapsed at 4am at work, having put in more than 80 hours of overtime each month for six months before his death. "The moment when I am happiest is when I can sleep," Mr Uchino told his wife the week of his death. He left two children,  Polo Ralph Lauren ged one and three.

As a manager of quality control, Mr Uchino was constantly training workers, attending meetings an Juicy Couture Outlet writing reports when not on the production line. Toyota treated almost all that time as voluntary and unpaid. So did the Toyota Labour Standards Inspection Office, part of the labour ministry. But the court ruled that the long hours were an integral part of his job. On December 14th the government dec Cheap Kobe Bryant Shoes ided not to appeal against the verdict.

Previous estimates of China's PPP were largeJuicy Couture Outlety guesswork. Now the World Bank has produced new calculations based on a survey of prices of over 1,000 goods and services in 146 countries, including China for the firs Juicy Couture Wallets me. On this basis, China's GDP in 2005 was $5.3 trillion, compared with $2.2 trillion using market exchange rates and $8.9 trillion using

previous PPP estimates. This was still well below America's $12.4

trillion that year (see chart).

But this does not mean China's economic miracle has been just a statistical artefact. The revisions do not reduce China's growth rate-the fastest over 30 years of any large country in history. It remains the world's largest producer and consumer of steel, th Juicy Couture Bikini econd-biggest user of energy and even on revised figures the

world's second-largest economy. In 2008 it is almost certain to overtake Germany as the world's largest

exporter, and assuming recent rates of growth are sustained, within ten  Nike FREE Run s it will overtake America (in

China itself has always played down the PPP numbers, hoping to portray itself as a Ralph Lauren Shoes  country so America will give it more leeway when arguing about exchange rates and trade. China's policymakers will not be unhappy with their new, slimline figure. Indians, in contrast, love to boast that their GDP overtook Japan's in 2006 to become the world's third-biggest. Unfortunately, this is no lo Ralph Lauren Rugbyser true: its GDP has also been slashed by almost 40%.

With Brazil's GDP also down a bit, the share of emerging economies in world output (including Asia' Kobe Vi s newly industrialising economies) has been cut to 46% in 2005, compared with over 50% on the old numbers. Their economic dominance has merely been postponed.

Death by overwork in Japan

The commission and courts will have lots of complaints to handle after the polls close. If they enforce the rules impartially and promptly, they could set Thailand back on the road to democracy. If they Juicy Couture Handbags re arbitrary, biased or dilatory, they may doom it to more years of instability-especially if they leave the impression that the people have voted for Thaksinism, only to have their will subverted.

AMERICANS may well be delighted by  Kobe Vi w figures that show China's GDP is 40% smaller than previously thought. Has the devious Beijing government been massaging the numbers, as communist planners are wont to do? Hardly. Nike Air Max China's GDP in yuan terms remains unchanged. What has happened is that the World Bank has changed the calculations it uses to make international comparisons of the size of economies.

Converting a poor country's GDP into dollars at market exchange rates can understate t Juicy Couture Outlet  true size because a dollar buys much more in an emerging market such as China than it does in America. The IMF and the World Bank therefore prefer to

convert GDPs into dollars using purchasing-power  parities (or PPPs), which take account of price differences between countries.
