stale, just another spa where ageing hippies got pampered. Was it, as some unkind graffiti on the welcome sign read, just "jive shit for rich white folk"?

the baths were rebuilt, and Mr Murphy started the "centre for theory and research", his "R&D arm", as he calls it, to spawn new ideas. The spawning, so far, seems ho-hum. There is talk about eco-psychology. And Esalen hopes to extend a new round of East-West citizen diplomacy to Islam. Most tellingly, though,
