Quad-core mobile devices are on their way, and a good many of them will be arriving at Mobile World Congress in February. But Apple could be lining up to play party-pooper in a big way by announcing the next-generation iPad 3 at the end of January.
The original Apple iPad was announced in January of last year, pretty much inventing the tablet market on the spot. This year's follow-up the iPad 2 was a little longer in arriving, taking until April to finally become official, and by now of course rival tablets are coming thick and fast.
But with the hardware jump to quad-core and Android's evolution to the all-important Ice Cream Sandwich both set to manifest early in the new year, Apple is no doubt thinking there's never been a more important time to get its hardware made public early.
The latest tip from a well-trusted iLounge source is that the iPad 3 will be slightly thicker than the wafer-thin iPad 2 in order to accommodate "the twin light bar system needed for its higher-resolution display".
We certainly have no problem with that, given the payoff that a bump in screen resolution will deliver in so many other areas.
The iLounge source claims the iPad 3 is currently on track to go on sale around March, but could be publicly shown off in January "depending on conditions", though there's no firm clarification on just what that means.
The same source also claims the next iPhone 5 will be 8mm longer overall to accommodate a bigger 4-inch screen, and will not look like the radical teardrop-shaped design that surfaced prior to the launch of the iPhone 4S.Desinger iPhone 4 cases

If you live well outside a major UK city or town, there's a pretty good chance that your mobile signal is less than brilliant. Vodafone is offering to help out 12 rural communities with a pioneering new scheme that will bring network signals to even the remotest of places.
Vodafone is already in the process of exploring ways to get a decent signal to rural locations through a pilot test in East Garston, Berkshire. Now it's looking to open up the scheme to a dozen more communities.
The network company achieves results by working with local governments and service providers to install femtocell stations on shops, pubs, telephone boxes, post offices and other prominent community hubs. These femtocell points connect to mobile networks via broadband, so being positioned in the middle of nowhere doesn't pose a problem.
Of course, the range of such femtocell stations is relatively limited, which is why Vodafone needs the coopoeration of local MPs and business owners in order to install them in multiple locations around each community.iPhone 4S cases

It hasn't even approached the iPhone 4′s ‘Antennagate‘ scandal, but the iPhone 4S has been kicking up a bit of a fuss with a perceived battery fault. We take a closer look at the issue, along with a possible solution.
Feeling drained
A sizeable minority of iPhone 4S users have reported that their handsets are losing power at an excessive rate. In most of these cases, the phone won't even last through a single day of moderate usage, and in some cases it's significantly less than a full day.
So what could be the cause? Apple's claims for the iPhone 4S's battery life lost in some areas compared to the iPhone 4, but gained in others. All in all, it should provide roughly the same battery performance - which means the ability to go through a whole day's usage with a decent amount of juice to spare.
The iPhone 5′s internal components are unlikely to be to blame for the sudden power drain problem. It may be significantly more powerful than the iPhone 4, but as the relative battery performance of the iPad 2 and iPad have shown, the A5 chip is at least as efficient as the A4, if not more so.
Which leaves us with the new iOS 5. Could this be the issue? It appears as if it might be having an effect, judging by reports that older devices running the new Apple operating system have seen degraded battery performance too. Fortunately, it appears that the precise source of the issue has been located - and it's extremely easy to fix yourself.

Problem solved?
Over on the iDownload blog, Oliver Haslam has claimed that the iPhone 4S battery issue relates to a small setting buried in the Location Settings menu.
Apparently the issue stems from the "Setting Time Zone" function, which adjusts the time on your iPhone when you switch between time zones. It seems there's a bit of a glitch in iOS 5 that keeps your iPhone constantly scanning for a change in location - even when you're quite clearly staying put most of the time. Naturally, this proves to be a giant power drain.
The solution, then, could be as simple as flipping the Setting Time Zone toggle to off. You won't lose any functionality - you'll just have to manually adjust the time when you fly abroad. The Nokia Lumia 800 promises to be a classy, well balanced smartphone when it finally hits stores in November. It will do so, however, along with the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, which takes are rather more in your face approach to winning our affections. Which will win?

Nokia Lumia 800 - 3.7-inch AMOLED ClearBlack display, 800 x 480 resolution
Samsung Galaxy Nexus - 4.65-inch Super AMOLED, 1280 x 720 resolution
Nothing shows the difference in approach more than the respective screen's of each device. The Samsung Galaxy Nexus's display is massive at 4.65-inches, and also claims to be high definition. The Nokia Lumia 800 adopts a more compact 3.7-inch form for easy one-handed use, which means its sharpness isn't too far off the Samsung's. Both use AMOLED displays, so colour vibrancy isn't an issue.
Power
Nokia Lumia 800 - 1.4GHz Qualcomm MSM8255 CPU, Adreno 205 GPU
Samsung Galaxy Nexus - 1.2GHz TI OMAP 4460 CPU, PowerVR SGX 540 GPU
There's no contest in the power stakes. The Samsung Galaxy Nexus features an almighty 1.2GHz dual-core CPU, while the Nokia Lumia's 1.4GHz processor only has the one core. Of course, there's no such thing as a dual-core Windows Phone - whereas there are plenty on Android - so it's all relative.

Nokia Lumia 800 - 16GB internal storage
Samsung Galaxy Nexus - 16 or 32GB, microSD up to 32GB
As we believe only 16GB Samsung Galaxy Nexus units are making their way over to this country, we're tempted to call this one a draw. While the Nokia Lumia 800 also has 16GB of internal storage, however, it doesn't have the Samsung Galaxy Nexus's microSD slot.
Camera

This one's tough to call, but we're going to have to go with the Nokia Lumia 800 at this early stage. While the Samsung Galaxy Nexus's 5-megapixel camera will have a number of plus points, such as zero-lag shutter times and 1080p video, we can't overlook the Lumia 800′s 8-megapixel unit, f/2.2 Carl Zeiss lens and Nokia's track record of turning out superb mobile cameras.

Samsung Galaxy Nexus - Android 4.0
Another tough call. We may have given the nod to the Nokia Lumia 800′s Windows Phone Mango OS against Android 2.3, because it's just nicer to use and look at than Android - despite the latter's flexibility and greater number of apps. Google's completely revamped the Android UI for version 4.0, though, so we'll have to wait and see if it can become as intuitive as it is powerful.

Amazingly, despite the massive discrepancy in screen size, the Samsung Galaxy Nexus is both thinner and lighter than the Nokia Lumia 800.
